This last Sunday 60 Minutes aired the documentary The Storm After the Storm, an expose’ on the egregious claims conduct of flood insurance companies in the wake Superstorm Sandy; specifically, their alleged widespread and systematic alteration of engineer’s reports by which they used to deny valid flood claims.
CBS did an amazing job highlighting this behavior and its affect on consumers. While my wife and I were watching, she turned to me and said, “Is it this severe and deliberate.” Yes, I replied. Even she, a woman who has been around to see our firm’s hard fought battles against carriers was truly shocked by the extent of the fraud.
It is this reason most consumers get taken advantage of by insurance carriers, it is truly hard to wrap your head around this type of behavior, and it’s the threats you never see coming that are the most surprising.
We encourage everyone to watch this 60 minutes piece, and the next time you are involved with an insurance claim. Get a neutral opinion from an expert, NEVER take the insurance carriers word as fact
